Ocean Drive is the Miami Beach street at the center of the Art Deco District, lined with historic hotels, restaurants and bars. It suits the first half of a night: a table, a walk and a first drink. A nightclub night is a different plan with a different door, so decide which one you want before you book anything.
What Ocean Drive Miami is
Ocean Drive is a South Beach street in Miami Beach, Florida, and it runs north as far as 15th Street. Developed in the 1920s and 1930s, it sits at the middle of the Miami Art Deco District, which contains about 900 preserved, contributing buildings. The street is known mostly for those Art Deco hotels and for its restaurants and bars, many of which have turned up in movies and other media.
It is also home to Casa Casuarina, the residence of the late Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace, which is why you will see people stopping on the sidewalk to take photographs.
Ocean Drive Miami at night: what the strip does well
The appeal of the street is that everything is within walking distance and most of it faces the pavement. That makes it good for:
- An early dinner or a long drink outside. Hotel restaurants and sidewalk bars are the core of the street.
- Architecture after dark. The Art Deco facades are part of the reason people come, and they read differently once the neon is on.
- A flexible group. Nobody needs a reservation time to walk a strip, which helps when a group arrives in stages.
What it does not replace is a nightclub with a door policy, a production and a set time to arrive. If you want that, treat Ocean Drive as the warm-up and the club as the second stop.
Ocean Drive or a nightclub: how to choose
A comparison works best as a short list of options, so here is how the two nights differ:
- A night on Ocean Drive. Walk-up, outdoors, paced by you. Good for a mixed group, a first night in town or anyone who wants to see the street itself. You decide when it ends.
- A nightclub night. Fixed entry, an age limit and usually a dress code, with the evening built around the room and the music. Read the venue’s own entry rules before you travel. Two Miami clubs with venue pages on this site are STORY and Mr Jones.
- Both in one night. Eat and walk the strip early, then go on to a club. This is the version that needs the most planning, because the club side has a start time and the street side does not.
If dinner is the part you want to lock in, the Miami restaurants page is the place to start.
How to plan your night on Ocean Drive Miami
- Pick the format first. Strip night, club night or both. Everything else follows from that choice.
- Work backwards from the hard start. If a club or a dinner reservation is in the plan, that time is fixed and the walk fills the gap before it.
- Check the street on the day. Ocean Drive has been closed to cars before: in July 2020 the Miami Beach Commission banned cars on it, and it reopened to traffic in January 2022. Confirm current traffic rules and any event closures before you plan a ride to the door.
- Book what has a start time. Dinner and club entry are the two things worth securing ahead.
- Plan the ride home before you go out. Decide how the group gets back to the hotel while everyone is still making sensible decisions.
