Do you remember the year 1905?? ……. Neither do we, but what a historical year that was. Las Vegas was founded and Fremont Street was established, later becoming the first paved street in Las Vegas in 1925. While many are familiar with Las Vegas Boulevard (“The Strip”), Fremont Street and Downtown Vegas have been around just as long with just as much history behind it. The first casino to become licensed with a gambling license was the Northern Club in 1931 and that led the way for Las Vegas to become the gaming capital of the world.
Much has changed over the years in Las Vegas and Fremont Street has been through its own ups and downs. In 2006, the city revealed plans to re-develop Fremont Street East in an attempt to revitalize the downtown area. While Fremont Street East may not contain the flashy Las Vegas nightlife you can find on the Strip (like XS Nightclub and Marquee Nightclub), it has become a favorite for locals with several popular bars and live music offered regularly.
Some favorites:
Insert Coins – a video-game lounge/nightclub that is home to 60 vintage restored arcade games and plenty of TVs with the newest gaming systems
Beauty Bar – features a large back patio for live shows and is retrofitted with the late fifties Capri Salon of Beauty from Trenton, New Jersey
The Griffin – Its great ambiance, low lighting and comfy booths give this place an old Vegas feel without having to try too hard
Downtown Cocktail Room – one of the swankier, cozier bars of downtown Las Vegas
Hogs & Heifers Saloon – With country music blaring, scantily clad bartenders (leather bikini tops and short skirts) dancing on the bar and cheap beer flowing, this joint practically defines “dive bar”
These are just a few! There are also many more bars and restaurants in the works. So on that night you are not sure what to do or when you are not up for the big nightclubs and getting all dressed up, make a trip down to Fremont Street and check out what Downtown Vegas has to offer!
